Last month, Bryan had the opportunity to travel for work again. This time it took him to international destinations, i.e. Guam.
Here is Guam. Yes, we both had to look up where exactly Guam is. Turns out, it is literally in the middle of the ocean. The closest land mass is either the Philippines or Papua New Guinea. Middle. Of. Nowhere.
The Navy has a large base there, and many boats stop there while in transit to other places. Bryan was asked to look at some piping and other things on the USS Michigan, a submarine.
Unlike our trip to San Diego in February, we had more than two days to plan, and we were only going to be gone for a week and a half. We looked into having everyone, me and the boys, go with him, but that didn't work out. (At $2000 dollars a pop, yeah Nope!) So I decided that the boys and I would spend the week at my parent's house in Winnemucca, NV. Bryan was (luckily) able to convince the powers that be to let him fly out of Reno (2 hours from Winnemucca) so I wouldn't have to make the 12 hour drive by myself.
We left Thursday night, and drove all through the night, arriving in Winnemucca Friday morning. As crazy as that sounds, it was realllly nice not to have to entertain children for 12 hours. We put on a movie for them, and they quickly fell asleep and slept until we were almost there. Super nice!
I took Bryan to the airport at the crack of dawn Sunday morning (we spent the night in Reno on Saturday and celebrated my birthday!), where he commenced his 23 hour trip. There is a 17 hour time difference, so he arrived in Tamuning, Guam on Monday night.
Here is the view from his hotel room, at the Sheraton Resort. Yeah, really gross. He had a rough time. ;)
While Bryan was frolicking on the beaches of Guam, we were having fun times in Winnemucca. It rained pretty much everyday we were there (we brought Seattle with us!) so we couldn't put Grandma Street's big back yard to use. But we did find fun things to do.
We took the boys to lunch at McDonald's and let them play. Pretty much the best day ever in the mind of a 5 year old.
They put together puzzles, drew pictures, and watched LOTS of movies.
My Mom and I put up her sign/quote wall. It was actually really fun, and something that I'm totally doing at my house.
My sister Taylor and her roommate Chelsea came up Memorial Day weekend, and Taylor did a photoshoot with the boys for her blog countryhipster.com. (GO check it out. It's awesome sauce!) My children are total hams, and it was the one day it didn't rain, so they just were in heaven.
Bryan flew out of Guam on Saturday morning (Guam time) and arrived back in Reno Saturday morning (our time!). Needless to say he had some adjusting to do. I was just glad he was back in the same time zone! Figuring out how to talk to your loved one with a 17 hour time difference was quite a challenge!
After Bryan had recovered from his jet lag (kind of), we left for home on Memorial Day. It was an amazing vacation, and I have the best parents EVER who love to play host and let us eat all their food for a week and a half. Seriously, they're the best.
I have strictly forbidden Bryan from volunteering from anymore trips for the rest of the year. So I mean it when I say we are not going ANYWHERE for the rest of the year. (Except maybe somewhere local in August for a quick vacay!) But ya'll are more than welcome to come visit us! Seattle is beautiful this time of year!!
(Not as pretty as Guam though...)
